What is ArteFill?

ArteFill at this time is the only FDA-approved non-resorbable filler for the correction of facial folds and smile lines. Non-resorbable means there are components that do not degrade and stay in the skin permanently. Artefill consists of 20% PMMA and 80% purified bovine collagen gel. There is added 0.3% lidocaine which provides anesthetic benefit for injection comfort.

How does ArteFill work?

The collagen in Artefill provides an immediate correction where placed. The PMMA microspheres provide a long lasting support structure. As the bovine collagen degrades, your own collagen takes its place and interweaves around the PMMA, providing the long lasting effects.

Is ArteFill injected differently than other fillers?

Artefill is injected very similarly as other fillers, but somewhat deeper. The ideal placement is directly above the fat layer so there is deep layer support.

What are the potential side effects?

As with any injected product, you may experience bruising and/or slight swelling. **To lessen bruising, stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatories and supplements two weeks prior if possible. If you take Rx blood thinners, you must talk with your primary physician first to see if it is safe for you to seek cosmetic injections or laser treatments.  See supplements to avoid to help lessen bruising. Some seemingly innocent supplements can cause big problems!

How is ArteFill different from temporary dermal fillers?

Temporary fillers are broken down over time by the body’s reaction to a foreign substance. They are made to do this. Artefill has the inert microbeads which do no not break down. This is what provides the ongoing support for your own collagen modification.

For those who are more comfortable with the idea of a less permanent choice or wish to have filler products for the lip or finer lines, the alternatives include Juvederm – a hyaluronic acid gel which is an ideal product for plumping the lips; Radiesse for nasolabial folds (longevity around 18 months) and for injectable augmentation of the cheeks or chin; Restylane for a variety of wrinkle and line correction; and Cosmoderm for fine lines around the mouth and lips.
