What Happens During a Chemical Peel

In La Jolla

By Nasrin Mani, M.D.

Is your skin starting to sag, wrinkle, and generally look old and tired? If so, you may consider getting a chemical peel at the La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic. The term “chemical peel,” however, sounds a little scary and painful.  Actually, the chemical peel procedure is nearly painless, not at all scary, and the entire process takes less than half an hour.

The Chemical Peel Process At The La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic

First, one of our trained cosmetic technicians will apply a stringent cleansing agent to your face. This step eliminates any grease or dirt from your pores, ensuring that when the chemicals are applied, they will reach all areas of your face equally. While this cleansing agent may sting slightly, the sensation passes quickly.

Next comes the actual chemical peel. You might undergo a slight burning sensation while the chemical peel is being applied, but it’s nothing to worry about. During this step of the process, your skin might also become white or “frosted,” indicating that the peel is indeed doing its job. These skin responses are perfectly normal and will fade within hours of the treatment’s completion. Several layers of the chemical peel may be applied depending on the desired effect.

After five to ten minutes, the technician will neutralize the peel by removing it with cool water. Finally, a calming mask is applied to your face for several minutes to help your skin start to recover. You won’t see instant results and for the first week, your face may experience peeling, flaking, and redness. After those seven days, though, your smooth and healthy skin emerges.

Multiple Chemical Peel Treatments

While you can receive multiple chemical peels for your face, Dr. Nasrin Mani recommends a four-week waiting period between treatments to allow your skin to rejuvenate and rebuild itself. Remember that chemical peels will not erase every blemish from your face.  Deeper wrinkles, scarring, and other flaws may require different approaches and procedures available at the La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic.
