Mechanism for Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Now researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have shown exactly how laser skin rejuvenation works.

The key is heat and not light from the lasers. And not just any heat. It turns out that a thermal shock of rapid heating to about 45º C (113º F) is just right to jump-start collagen production in cells. Apparently, keeping the cells at this temperature for about 8-10 seconds resulted in a maximum expression of collagen-producing genes. Higher temperatures than 113º result in skin cell damage, and just two seconds at 60º C (140º F) killed skin cells.

These detailed studies may someday lead to even more precise controls in laser skin rejuvenation, but for now the technique remains something of an art as well as a science.
