Acne can have one of the most detrimental effects on your appearance, but though you may think it is something you simply have to live with, acne can be reduced through photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy for acne, or PDT, is a treatment that targets cells damaged by acne and destroys them, providing you with healthier, even skin tone.
PDT works on acne through a two-step process. The first step uses Levulan, a topical solution, which binds itself to the damaged cells in your skin. After the Levulan is absorbed by the acne-damaged cells, an IPL or Blu-U light source is used to activate the solution and destroy the damaged cells.
If you suffer from resistant or cystic acne, you may have tried other acne treatments and found them ineffective. PDT has been developed specifically to work on acne which cannot be treated by medication or topical ointments. It kills the acne-causing bacteria and suppresses the glands that stimulate bacterial activity. You are likely to see a marked improvement to your skin tone in as little as one treatment, though many patients experience the most benefit by repeating treatments up to three times.
